How to Make “Eggnog Whip” Coffee

It’s getting that time of year where the eggnog starts to infiltrate the grocery store shelves. I love eggnog. It’s not at all a healthy part of my diet, let’s be honest… so I only have it as a treat! And the best way to have treats is to make it something you earn and struggle for. Because of that, I actually like to make eggnog from scratch! That way I don’t let myself just grab one off the supermarket shelf, and regret ingesting an entire carton the next day (haha, true story). No! If you make it yourself, spend the time doing it, then it’s something that you’ve worked for and the the time in to and can thoroughly savor. PLUS! It’s healthier if you make it yourself because you know exactly what’s in it. Clean eating for the win!

Watch the video on my YouTube channel, where I talk about bakes, cakes, and travel dates!

So how to make homemade eggnog just a little bit more special? It’s certainly tastier than the store-bought variety all on its own, and is worth it simply for that! But if we want to spice it up a bit, we can incorporate it into our coffees and lattes and even do a sweet egg whip! Egg whips were all the rage last year — the year of 2020 — not sure if they still are? But they are still just as delicious.

This is the kind of thing I would make and cozy up on the couch with my dog, watching episodes of the Great Canadian Baking Show or the Great British Bake Off. Something that’s just quintessentially comforting. On the other hand, it’s also a FAB treat to have while working or sketching, and the studio instantly catches all the coffee house vibes simply because of how AMAZING it smells and how DELICIOUS it is! What’s not to love? Café at home? Heck yes! It reminds me of having fika in my favorite Stockholm cafes, just sketching away!

How to make eggnog whip coffee? It's a twist on Vietnamese egg coffee, but with the cozy deliciousness of eggnog. I mean I like just the eggnog part but if I'm really craving some hot coffee variant, this is how I'd do it. xxoo

EGGNOG RECIPE

  • 2-3 tablespoons of honey

  • 1 cup of whole milk or cream

  • 3 eggs, separated whites/yolks

  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg

  • 1/2 teaspoon of ginger

  • 1 tsp of vanilla a pinch of salt (optional)

  • 1 shot of bourbon (instructions)

    WHAT NOW?

    1. Put the egg whites aside if you intend to make the whipped part!

    2. In a large bowl, mix egg yolks with milk or cream. Mix until it is lighter in color.

    3. Pour the milk, salt, nutmeg, and ginger in to a medium saucepan, and on medium high heat, scald while stirring frequently (about 10 minutes).

    4. Very slowly, add the scalded milk mixture to the bowl of egg yolks/honey. Whisk until combined.

    5. Pour the mixture in to the saucepan on a medium/low heat, stirring often for ten minutes. 6. Remove from heat. Add a teaspoon of vanilla (and the bourbon if desired).

    7. Using a sieve, strain the mixture in to a large bowl or flask.

    8. Refrigerate the eggnog or enjoy warm.

There! That sorts out the eggnog part of the story. Now, let’s get to the whip part!
